Before an initial appointment we begin with a phone call to discern if an auditory processing assessment with us is appropriate. If it is, we will then send you a link to an online form, asking questions around medical history and listening difficulty to save time during the appointment so that concentration levels whilst testing are at their best. This can be done over the phone instead of the online form if preferred.

Length: 15-30 minutes

This assesses how well sound gets to the brain, including how well the outer, middle and inner ears are functioning. This is looking for any health issues in the ear as well as any permanent hearing loss. It does not assess what the brain does with the sound once it gets there (e.g. understanding speech in a noisy environment). This is the standard diagnostic hearing assessment non-APD clinics perform. NOTE: A diagnostic hearing test (including a full set of acoustic reflexes) is required prior to any APD assessment.

Length: 1 hour

Following on from a hearing test, an auditory processing assessment tests how well the brain is able to make use of the sound that the ears give it. There are several areas of auditory processing (see the Resources tab) and a selection of tests will be completed across a range of these areas (dependent on age and listening difficulties reported) with results compared to same-age peers. This assessment provides a much more detailed picture of how well someone can make sense of sound, rather than just notice the sound like the initial hearing test.

Following the assessment, a report will be sent detailing whether a diagnosis of auditory processing disorder (APD) has been confirmed. This report will also include treatment/intervention options, if appropriate.

Cost: $500 (or $620 if a hearing test has not yet been completed).

Following on from any intervention, it can be useful to repeat the APD assessment, especially any specific areas of difficulty, so that we know if any further intervention is required.

Length: 2 hours

Dependant on the test results, technology may be recommended to make sound louder and/or clearer so the brain can process it easier. This could involve a microphone that a teacher or communication partner wears which sends their voice directly (wirelessly) to devices worn on the ears, or it may involve hearing aids worn full-time that are set up to make voices clearer compared with surrounding noise, or both options can be set up together.

Length: 1 hour for initial fitting, 30 mins for follow-up appointments
